Hengifoss

Hengifoss in Fljótsdalur is one of the better-known destinations in East Iceland and one of the highest waterfalls in the country. An impressive service center has been built where there is a good hiking trail to the waterfall.

The parking lot at Hengifoss

Hengifoss is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland and very majestic as it is surrounded by magnificent cliffs. There is a service center at the parking lot where you can learn about the waterfall and the surrounding area.

From the service center there is a good and well-marked hiking trail to the waterfall, but it is quite a walk to get there. You can expect the walk to take up to an hour, but on the way you can see another waterfall called Litlanesfoss, which is surrounded by columnar rocks and is therefore worth stopping there. There are also benches everywhere to rest on.

It is important to consult with a local ranger if you plan to visit the waterfall in the winter, as traffic and weather can be hazardous.

There are no fines for not paying on site, but instead using automatic lookup. In those cases, the car owner will receive a parking fee sent to their online bank account, plus a bank transfer fee.

NOTE! If the car is owned by another party, such as a car rental company, fees may be added from the party that owns the car.
